Sterling Silver vs Gold Vermeil: What's the Difference?

Sterling Silver vs Gold Vermeil: What's the Difference?

Two Metals, One Question

When shopping for fine jewellery, you'll often encounter two terms: sterling silver and gold vermeil. Both are beautiful and used in quality jewellery, but they're quite different in composition, appearance, and care. At SOMYA LONDON, we work with both, and we want to help you make the choice that's right for you.

What Is Sterling Silver?

Sterling silver is an alloy made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (typically copper) for added strength. You'll often see it stamped as “925.” It's the standard for fine silver jewellery worldwide, valued for its bright, cool-toned lustre and its ability to be worked into intricate designs.

Pros of Sterling Silver:

  • Timeless, classic appearance
  • Durable and long-lasting with proper care
  • More affordable than gold
  • Develops a beautiful patina over time

Cons of Sterling Silver:

  • Tarnishes with exposure to air and moisture
  • Requires regular polishing to maintain shine

What Is Gold Vermeil?

Gold vermeil (pronounced “ver-may”) is sterling silver that has been plated with a thick layer of gold — at least 2.5 microns, according to UK standards. This distinguishes it from gold-plated jewellery, which uses a base metal and a much thinner gold layer. Vermeil offers the warmth and richness of gold at a more accessible price point, without compromising on quality.

Pros of Gold Vermeil:

  • Warm, luxurious gold appearance
  • Higher quality than standard gold-plated jewellery
  • Sterling silver base means it's hypoallergenic-friendly
  • More affordable than solid gold

Cons of Gold Vermeil:

  • Gold layer can wear over time with heavy use
  • Requires gentle care to preserve the finish

Which Should You Choose?

Choose sterling silver if you love a cool, classic look and want a piece you can wear every day without worry. Choose gold vermeil if you're drawn to the warmth of gold and want a luxurious finish at a considered price.
